When I heard there was a new Versamail out (3.5), I went over to PalmGear.com and purchased it. Immediately I began having problems, not with the program itself, but with my Treo restarting randomly, when I was not using it.
This eventually lead me to doing a hard reset and starting with a clean slate, from there I did the long and arduous process of installing all my apps back one by one. I have installed them all now, except for the new Versamail. And now four hours later I have had no problems. I will try without it for a few days, and see if anything happens, but I think it was Versamail 3.5 causing my problems.
Well that was ten bucks sent down the drain, oh well, atleast everything is backup and running correctly.
UPDATE: I suggest you look at the comments on this thread, there are a few, all good. In particular is the comment that talks about the memory usage, and very good point. This program cannot as far as I know be installed on the SD card, meaning it is on your limited ROM, also it is huge, and I mean it takes up a lot of space. Just beware of that, I forgot all about it.

I had a similar problem with SnapperMail. Once I had the SnapperMail app loaded on my Treo 650, pressing the “Home” key on the Treo resulted in a soft reset each and every time. I wiped the Treo clean of all third party apps, and re-installed only SnapperMail. Same exact problem. Wiped the Treo again and now I am back to the stock VersaMail only. Be glad that you only spent $10. SnapperMail costs $59!
I installed VersaMail 3.5 on my Treo 650 and both are working as they should. Maybe… the experience was an encountered with “Murphy”; and not with VersaMail 3.5.
I’m no expert on these things but one thing I noted in online discussions is that Versamail 3.5 is not a ROM update. Instead it uses up more of the scare RAM on the 650. Since I have been on the edge of overfull RAM more than once I have noticed that when I get much below 4MB free, I get lots of reboots and if I let RAM get too low, the phone doesn’t seem to have enough RAM to boot up so it gets in an endless reboot loop that can only be fixed by a hard reset. It may be possible that your problems were memory based rather than specific to VersaMail. I was looking into installing 3.5 but it doesn’t seem to have much new that I care about so I’ll probably pass.
The problem is that Snapper and Versamail continue to store data in your Treo’s memory.
Fix that I learned from Snapper:
Get software called FileZ
Insatll it
Go to View and Edit Files
Go to Snapper and delete msgcon, msglist, msgmime
This deletes a bunch of unused data.
When you re-sync your email client only the current data will be stored and this will typically free up about 8MB to 9MB of data which is probably why your Treo restarts…. In automotive terms, it is flooded….
When I send an email from my Treo 650 a great deal of info appears at the beginning of the email (before the message) that I did not add and I can’t get rid of it. Here’s what the recipient sees:

I am using a LifeDrive (with Palm 4.0) and purchased VersaMail 3.5Mac as an upgrade but am unable to install it after many hours of trying and searching for answers. Message I get is that there is no application on my handheld that can open it. Any advice?
I have been using an unlocked Treo 650 with versamail 3.1 with no problems for over a year. Recently I created an activesync account which worked for a couple days but lacked the contacts sync (available in versamail 3.5). When 3.1 stopped working, in my quest to discover the cause/problem I found the upgrade to 3.5. Mistakenly think “newer’s always better”, I purchased 3.5 and updated the palm OS from 5.1? to 5.4.8 (required to install versamail 3.5) Immeadiately after installing the versamail 3.5 the treo went into and endless reset loop , only to be solved by a hard reset. After the hard reset I synced and the endless reset loop returned. Knowing that I had a lot of old apps that I was no longer using or interested in, I decided to install one app at a time to make sure I only had what I wanted and to locate the cause of the reset loop (at the time I suspected conflicting apps). I started with destaller so I could immeadiately uninstall anything that caused a problem. Next was the versamail 3.5 upgrade. That was the problem. I’m sure it has nothing to do with memory, as the completely clean treo has over 21 mb of free space and the uninstalled Versamail 3.5 is only 4.4mb. I’m at a loss, other than resort back to versamail 3.1 and sync my contacts another way. That would be fine with me, provided the activesync actually worked consistantly.
Anyone else have any experiances like this, or any suggestions.
