Aperture 1.5.1 Why?

9 11 2006

I’ll tell you why, because it rocks. I was always envious of this program, never having a computer that met the specs to run it, and not really having the cash to afford it. But a couple weeks ago when I got my Mac Pro, I realized I had the machine for it, and so I went out and got it for myself. Prior to it I had tried Lightroom (ever edition) and was never impressed with it, it didn’t have the polish of and Apple program and the UI didn’t do anything for me. So I was stuck using iPhoto (fantastic program) and Adobe Photoshop CS. That was my workflow.

This meant that I really only stored and viewed photos, I didn’t edit all of them, iPhoto only has basic tools and Photoshop was a pain to bring into the mix. So now that I have Aperture I can report that it has totally changed the way I work, and take pictures.

You can read a review of Aperture and its features elsewhere, I want to focus on why you should buy it. Which is simple, if you are taking or scanning lots of pictures you want this. In fact if you do anything with the pictures you take other than post to the web or view occasionally on screen, you want this program.

The reason?

It rocks. It makes it easy to edit the images, and to edit them worry free of destroying them. And it has backup built in, so it is a worry free, easy to use, powerful, slick, beautiful piece of software. Yeah it is slow at times, but what program isn’t, there are bugs, but who cares. The pros here are much greater than the cons in my opinion.

More than anything else though, I find my self popping it open the moment I have some free time to play with pictures. This program really makes me want to take more and more pictures so that I can play around with them in Aperture.

I know I usually love all of Apple’s stuff, and I am biased in their favor. But in this case there are only two pieces of software out there that do this, Aperture and Lightroom. Lightroom is not up to snuff, the only reason to use Lightroom is if your system is to slow to run Aperture, or your budget cannot afford Aperture. But if you at all like taking digital photos, Aperture is the one for you.
